UK residents only: Can you take/report Car Insurance Agencies to Trading Standards? It seems as if my Insurance agency (Direct Line Insurance) can't seem to understand a claim/report that I've given them (six times). I have told them what happened to my car and they keep getting their story wrong, even after sometimes the people I talk to say "oh now I see what you're saying", I still get phone calls and letters claiming some other version that I've told them (which I didn't) Can I report these to Trading Standards?

babe77 (caitlins mum) replied: "yes you can but im not sure how they will help you that way why dont you just send them a letter explaining your version instead of tellin them on the phone"

SID replied: "I would take a look ta this link. They talk about the same issues."

Cat replied: "Yes, they will investigate your claim."

I am that I am faults included replied: "Yes if you want to but their is also an insurance regulator as well but why not write them a letter to their director of financial services saying you will be putting your claim through your solicitors an passing on his charges as part of your claim if they cannot rectify your claim within 7 days from the day they receive your letter then send it registered post an get a receipt an make a point of letting them know you have had to resort to this method because of there total lack of customer service an the postal charges will also be added to the claim as will any future mailings. I can guarantee they will soon put things right as they will not want the cost to them to escalate. Now go get them."

Sarah J replied: "yeah as far as i know u should report them to the financial ombudsman."

Jackson P replied: "Nothing to do with trading standards. You need to get onto the insurance ombudsman if you are having difficulty getting them to pay out. I had a similar problem with them and it was only when I mailed the MD and other directors directly that it got sorted out."

JASON C replied: "Perhaps You could google it first ,nonetheles, if you perfer some direct resource ,here might be your choice."

-Stuart- replied: "The Financial Ombudsman Service is the organisation you need. See site below."

Reynold D replied: "bridgesandrew96, For car insurance the quickest method to get a low quote is do a car policy comparison. If you choose the same coverage levels, you can get an accurate quote to compare against others. Use the same zipcode, auto make/model, mileage and driving history to ensure you get an apples to apples comparison. To get mulitple auto quotes, go to and you can compare all the major auto insurance companies."

david536259 replied: "You may be able to complain to the ombudsman - or one of the the trade associations. See attached list."

lost job car insurance??? UK? just wondered if i need to inform my insurance company (direct line) as i plan on getting another job

Donald replied: "you do not have to inform them as long as you can pay it on the due date they dont care where you work or if you work as long as you pay your insurance the same goes with leasing a car"

Tomas 2 replied: "good luck"

Has anyone ever seen such a stupid list of occupations as the ones in this on-line car insurance form? I just took a car insurance policy with Liverpool Victoria and reading these occupations, starting to wonder whether I should be regretting it. They don't have my occupation (author), or my girlfriend's (waitress), but have kissogram person, children's entertainer, hawker (???), and many other strange ones... thoughts please? You need to view the list of occupations about halfway down the "About You" section. Have fun. I hope it lets me paste this long link here: servletcontroller?start[1].brand=lv&start[1]. type=Motor&start[1].startingScreen=new& PRODUCT=motorNewQuote&userDetails[1]. subGroup=0&source[1].sourcePassed= &PRESENTATION_TYPE=&MODE=XX ].brand=lv&start[1].type=Motor&start[1].startingScreen=new&PRODUCT=motorNewQuote&userDetails[1].subGroup=0&source[1].sourcePassed=&PRESENTATION_TYPE=&MODE=XX Seems the long link does not work. From here, choose to get a new car insrance quote. It should be on the first screen that comes up. >
sian p replied: "they have got a circus worker and a showman though!"

jeanimus replied: "You have to fill the whole form in to get to that bit. Theyll probably send me emails for ever. And I dont have a car! btw a hawker is someone who sells door to door. Ha I tried again and looked properly, I didnt need to fill it in. They havent got my job either. So Id plump for exotic dancer."

geordiecarol replied: "just had a look at the list!! hehehe!! i think i may be a circus worker today!!"

WelshLad replied: "That is messed up"

welcome news replied: "I think 'Hawker' is someone who 'hawks' goods - not a bird trainer! At work our quotation system asks for 'chicken sexer'."

C T replied: "very strange. I have seen tea-blender and chicken sexer before (i can't imagine what that jobs entails but could be related to the kernel's secret recipe)."

Oracle replied: "There are some good ones on there yes! Drop-down lists on online quote engines etc are supplied by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to ensure that quote engines correctly rate and underwrite quotations. The lists displayed on websites are the same as those insurance professionals also access via their own trading software systems. Accordingly, you have to cater for every eventuality - after all, there are "chicken packers" and "abattoir workers" out there!"

Which UK car insurance firm accepts old company car ncb? Opting out of Scheme,,,,? I am currently opting out of the company car scheme and giving back my A4. I'm buying an A3 2.0tdi 170 S-line group 13. Which company will accept 3 years claim free with company car?

GOONER replied: "there is no companys that will accept it as ncb, but will give you the eqivilent discount 65% but you will start from scratch but getting the max discount. so its not that bad! Equity Red Star, NU give a broker a call like A Plan or Endsleigh."

Rachel replied: "I work for Aviva - all of the companies they underwrite give you it. e.g NUD, Barclays, Asda, Ford Insure. I think the post office is now underwritten by Norwich union too, so maybe try them. I know Direct line does it as weel cos my dad went with them. What they do is give you 70% ncb and after your 2nd year staying with them they will actually give you the 5 years to take to another company. Its just policy holder and spouce though, no additional drivers. If you dont want overseas call centres best to go with Barclays or ford insure - or direct line. Hope this helps"

oadbywonder replied: "If you get your ncb from your companies insurance firm in writing then any new insurance firm should take i but why not stay with the same insurance company ?"

Car insurance 18year old male in the UK help please ? hi does anyone know a good company for car insurance for young males in the UK and does anyone know any good techniques of getting it cheap ie more drivers etc. also does the quote of the companys like more than, direct line etc. be accurate online or does it be different prices when you phone because for more than, i get a quote of about £800 online but direct line is about £1500???

jessika ♥s james replied: "try liverpool victoria thats where my 18 year old boyfriend got his from"

sian p replied: "You will be looking to spend around £1500 I would think because of your age, you can take a pass plus course which I believe reduces your insurance with some companies. Isn't it possible for you to be a named driver on a parents insurance? mind you, my dad rang to have me put on his policy and I have been driving for yonks and I have never had an accident and they wanted to charge him nearly £100 for 6 months, I only pay £156 for the year - cheeky s*ds!"

Becks ♥z Kye *Bella's Mummy* replied: "express insurance are gd and quinn are really cheap *edit* my fiance was with them when he was learning and after he passed and 2yrs on he is still with them and with 2 accidents his insurance on a sportKa 1.6 is only £1000 so try Quinn. also any insurance companys put there prices up by loads when people pass as there is nobody sitting next to them to tell them if its right or wrong."

Pauline F replied: "I have recently scoured everywhere for my 17 year old son. Don't be fooled by Quinn insurance they charge about 900 and then when you pass another 1000. Endsleigh insurance cost me 1900 for a polo and it depends on what car you have. There really are no hints or tips to get it cheaper although some charge a tine bit less for having a named driver on the insurance. Taking your pass plus within one month of your insurance can give you a 20% discount. One thing I would add is that when you get a quote of one go to another and tell them the price they will beat it!!"

Do-lally replied: "If you add your parents on to your license as named drivers this will lower your preminum, buy online as this is nearly always cheaper! I've found Elephant, Admiral & Churchill to be the cheapest for me."

Dannie M replied: "For automobile insurance the best way to get a fantastic rate is do a rate comparison on auto policies. Make certain that you pick similar options with the same limits, car make, zip code, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison. What I most often recommend is an online comparison quote at since they have top name insurers and will give many prices on auto insurance polices."

WelshLad replied: "£800 is quite cheap. Try"

Debra N replied: "sellyoakguy, Try getting an online insurance quote It's free and quick to do."

Allan P replied: "Over the phone isnt the best way to go - takes to much time. Online sites are the greatest because you can plug your information in and get a quote quick and easy. Doesnt take long and you can really save some money. Here is one that I have found to be the best = "

Do i have to declare my modifcations to direct line? Basically I bought a direct line car insurance (UK) They never asked about Modifications etc... Although i have changed the bumpers on the car and tinted windows with alloy wheels. Some sites are saying i dont have to tell them as they are covered in my policy. Advice please. You dont understand what i mean. When i signed up online for the policy they never asked about my modifications. Can someone goto directline.com and check the policy summary. I cant understand it but i think its saying im allowed modifications but they will only cover a certain limit eg £1000 Thanks Im only 17 btw my premium is £2800 Adding mods will rise so much.

LESLIE6789 replied: "Ask Direct Line"

U Heard it Here First!™ Official replied: "thats a tricky one edit - dont tell them, they will charge you extra for no reason. They customer representative will click some drop down menu and will select "modified car" which will increase your premium. This goes for even adding a stupid spoiler. AND AT THIS DAY AND TIME, they are going to sieve out as much money from us as possible. so they can maintain their status in the markets."

taxed till i die, replied: "You do have to tell them.If not you could invalidate your insurance."

sothaswotdidit replied: "yes with DL definitely - if you ever need to claim none of these will be covered and if it gets nicked you've made the vehicle more desirable to thieves"

smellybatty replied: "You only have to declare modifications if they alter the value of the vehicle, i.e. if u make improvements which increase the cars overall value. Any modifications which change the cars performance also have to be declared because you could be insured on a 1.2 litre engine but have a race car, unbeknown to direct line! Such modifications which alter the cars performance include an induction kit, which is basically a glorified air filter. I know its long, but have a read of their set terms and conditions to see if it is vital to declare your particular modifications, as they sound cosmetic rather than performance changing. Although i agree with some of the other views expressed in other peoples answers, that insurance companies will try to squeeze every penny out of u, its also worth remembering that should something happen, your insurance company will only pay for repair or replacement of parts which they were aware of at the time the policy started. you therefore have to consider whether the risk of you damaging, for example, your lovely alloys and having to fix them at your own expense, is worth the amount of money your premium will increase by. i reckon this will be circa £20 - £50."

Loopy-Lou replied: "the best thing to do is to tell them of the changes anyway. if they don't need to know about them then it doesn't matter, but if you needed to tell them about the changes and don't, then they can refuse to cover them. good luck xx EDIT - if you don't add the modifications and they require them then they may void your policy under grounds of misrepresentation/fraud and you may never get insured for anything again. the premium may go up another couple of Hundred pounds, but not declaring them could cost allot more in the long run"

John W replied: "Anything that chnages the vehicle from "standard" would have to be declared. This usually means around performance, but I guess fancy, expensive alloy wheels could fall into this category as well. If in doubt speak to Direct Line. Unlike some of the other answers I do not believe they will charge you for just anything......but will a realistic view of the modifications. At the end of the day, if you do not tell them and you have a claim, they could repudiate the claim on the basis of you not been forthcoming with the information........you have an obligation of utmost good faith."

car insurance claim-3rd party F & T,provisional licence, car was hit when i was away & parked legally? my car was hit from back when I was parked in residential road.I was away for 3 hrs when it was hit.(legal parking road where there are no lines.) I hold 3rd party Fire & theft insurance. on UK provisional licence. What is the procedure & am I eligible to claim.my insurance company can only assist to get me claim.but I am eligible.

Martyn B replied: "The type of insurance you have means you cant claim if YOU are hit by a car, only if YOU hit a car. You could try WINS, a frm that could get you compensation for the damage occured."

shaun d replied: "yes u can make a claim ring your insurance company and they will tell you what to do as long as you reported it to them and the police with in a set time normally 48 hours"

Tango replied: "Third party cover is exactly what it says. If a third party is responsible for the damage then you can legally claim from their insurance, they would then assess the value of the vehicle and the total cost of repair and proceed forthwith. However, as you were away, I take it that you don't know who the offender is unless you have a bystander as a witness and has taken the offender's vehicle registration number. Therefore you won't be able to claim and you will have to pay for the repair yourself. I you had fully comprehensive insurance you could have claimed but there is a possible chance that you would lose your no claims bonus if you didn't take out the no claims protection cover."

GEORGE B replied: "Sorry to say your not covered unless you know who hit you You need comprehensive cover for damage to your vehicle That's why there is a big difference between comp & third party insurance A provisional licence has no bearing on your cover"

The Lord replied: "You can't claim anything from your insurance company, the level of cover you have doesn't allow for this. In normal circumstances your insurance company would make a claim on your behalf against the other party involved. I'm guessing that you don't have their details though? If that's the case then it's a matter for the police, as I believe failure to report an accident to be a crime (or at least a civil offence). But if you were driving alone or breaking any of the rules for driving under a provisional licence you may find yourself on the wrong side of the law. Basicly, you're screwed."

Timbo is here replied: "Your insuance will not cover you. Your have to claim from the other parties insurer. If you have optional legal cover your insurer will help."

Rosia U replied: "I recommend an online insurance quote. It's free and quick to do. Good Luck!"

Fsa replied: "Okay, I have two cars (2003 Accord & a 1999 Bmw 323i). I have basic liability for both cars for my wife and I as drivers, plus $25,000 additional liability coverage on the cars. We just paid $427 for an entire year ($35/month )for the same car insurance company we were already paying around $2,000 for before! How can you beat that? I have tried and I have looked through numerous car insurance companies, you have to find the right bargain. Find the best deals available on the entire internet. If you already have Allstate, Geico, AIG, Progressive, Mercury, Esurance, American Family, Nationwide or any other USA auto insurance, and you are paying too much, Go here: (esurance from here would probably be the cheapest) (best for students and everyday drivers)"

Jack replied: "Try to deal it out of pocket, otherwise insurance rates will go up much more. You can check how quotes will change here - autoinsurance.noneto.com"

How can I reduce my car insurance premiums? I have 3 years driving experience (2 named, 1 no claims), I will have 2 years no claims bonus in July. I wish to buy a better can than what I have, something along the lines of a Ford Fiesta Zetec S 1.6, Renaulsport 2.0 172 or MG ZR 1.8 160. I have used every website I can think of - listed below: And all of these are coming out at well over £1,000 - which I well in excess of what I would like to pay. I currenty pay £380 per annum for a 1.4 Fiat Bravo. Apart from having my mum as a named driver, low mileage and parking in a secure garage at night, are their any other ways to drive my insurance down? I was thinking of trying the Pay as you Drive from Norwich Union but their website was down when I tried submitting the form. Sorry, my age is 23.

vimto replied: "Become an advanced driver. It can cut your insurance as much as 40% if you get the rospa gold certificate. "

bty937915 replied: "Try Post Office,I did and got a cheep insurance and £50 cash back"

Knownow't replied: "As well as all the above, agree to increase the excess on your policy (The amount you pay) if you increased it so you paid the first £500 or more that would reduce your premium. But do remember you do have to pay it if you have a crash...you can't have your cake and eat it."

D F replied: "HI- You have not said how hold you are, it makes a big difference, & you will not benifit on your premiums until you have been driveing for about 4 or 5yrs & iff you insure in gust your name it will be redused, your mum will be able to drive your car on her insurance, but dont have a large payment on your excess an excess of £ 50 to £100 is ok but anymore & you have an accident the car will never be repaired because of lack of funds be practical,D.F;"

True Grits replied: "Well...not knowing anything about insurance in the UK, I can only speak to lowering insurance in the US. Aside from your driving record, the best way to lower your rates is to raise you deductible - Hope that helps!"

rocky replied: "The best way is to spend a lot of time ringing insurance agents in the yellow pages although I have got over 40 years no claim I still spend time doing it every time my insurance is due Ive got mine down to £150 fully comp And barter one company against another"

Shouty dad replied: "Try they check loads of insurers for the best quote for you."

Im a male, i dont want no comparison sites as they are useless i can find sites that will give me good quotes, and please dont tell me to insure a 1.0 - 1.2 litre engine as i have figured out i can insure a 1.9 diesel engine for like £200 more. However i want to know if you know anymore than my current listen i have tried: Tesco llyods Tsb Direct line Virgin Vauxhall Citreon Peugoet If you know anymore can you please tell me thank you if anyone knows where i can get a 1995 peugeot 306 1.9D for cheaper than £1818 then please include it thank you

matt g replied: "Go to and search for cheap car insurance- there is an article that shows you how to compare 150 quotes in like 10 minutes. It is mostly using price comparison sites, however if you want a guide price then they are useful. It depends how much you want to spend though. I bought my first car at 19; it was a BMW 525 and cost £2830 to insure (yes a lot but by far the cheapest quote i found). Yeah I could have got a morris minor insured with footman james for £500 but I didn't want one. Good luck."

sevvy22 replied: "sorry but there isnt one even more so if your a lad us under 20 dont get cheap car insurance"

lora replied: "ma bro is 20, had two smashes and got ban for 8 months, his insurance is a good price, admiral..."

mutasiym replied: "Why don't you go and have a look on. And I'm with Quinn Direct the cheaper I have found via confused.com I hope it help."

realdolby replied: "You have big problems here and if you attempt to insure more than a Group 3 car it becomes even worse.Insurance is based on the Public Liability rather than the vehicle. In spite of this and doubt that you will listen try Quinn Direct.Or maybe ASDA.I have just insured a 17 yr old as a second driver in a Group 3 car for just £472,but with restrictions."

ralph replied: "Sorry ,No such animal"

Jack's Back! replied: "Try Quinn Direct"

John Q replied: "No such thing as Cheap at your age. Word of advise steer clear of 1.9 diesel engines the premium will be so much higher. Stick to vehicles under 1.3. or save your money until you get older."

Scouse replied: "Cheap car insurance and a 17 year old is a contradiction in terms"

sowing girl replied: "ha!! ha!! ha!! no such thing , but i do wish you luck"

StingRay replied: "Try Adrian Flux, they deal with young drivers, modified cars etc.."

John Wayne replied: "Try to visit this website which I just came across, a lot of info on Auto Insurance Quotes: "
